In the foothills of Mount Kenya, where the landscape can shift from generous seasonal rains to long dry spells, water is more than an agricultural input. It is a strategic resource. For Tambuzi, the specialist garden-rose grower, responsible water management has become an integral part of how the farm produces flowers while protecting the resource shared with surrounding communities.

Located near the Equator at about 1,900 meters above sea level, Tambuzi operates in an area receiving roughly 800 mm of rainfall annually. The farm's three production sites have developed a water-management philosophy built around one central principle: capture water when it is available, use it efficiently, and recycle it wherever possible.

At the center of Tambuzi's water strategy is its large reservoir at the Burguret farm. The farm says its approximately six-hectare dam is filled when the Burguret River is in spate during the rainy season, allowing the operation to store water without depending continuously on the river during drier periods.

This approach is particularly significant because the Burguret River is part of a wider catchment supporting farms and communities downstream. Tambuzi is a founding member and continuing supporter of the Burguret River Water User Association, which promotes lawful water use and conservation within the catchment and riparian areas.
