Prices of flowers and fruits surged across north Andhra Pradesh ahead of Varalakshmi Vratham, with increased festive demand pushing costs higher in local markets. Flower prices touched Rs 400-500 per kg, while fruit prices rose by nearly 30%.With Varalakshmi Vratham set to be observed on August 21, markets witnessed a rush of shoppers purchasing fruits, flowers, betel leaves and other puja essentials.

Traders said prices are likely to increase further in the coming days amid strong demand.Women across Visakhapatnam and other parts of the region flocked to jewellery stores, flower markets and fruit stalls, driven by the belief that buying even a small gold item ahead of the festival brings prosperity.

Heavy festival shopping led to traffic congestion in several parts of the city.Fruit prices saw a sharp rise in the run-up to the festival. A dozen bananas, which were selling for Rs 90 a few days ago, were priced at Rs 120 on Thursday. Apple prices increased from Rs 230 a dozen to Rs 300 a dozen, according to consumers. Prices of grapes, sweet lime and other fruits also moved up significantly.

Flower prices also rose steeply. Chrysanthemums were sold for around Rs 40 a dozen in some markets and up to Rs 80 in others, while other flower varieties ranged between Rs 60 and Rs 100 a dozen, depending on quality and availability.
